Why is my AC coil freezing over?
Ice on an air conditioner feels backwards. It's 95° outside, the system is working as hard as it ever will, and there's a block of ice growing inside your house. Homeowners usually read it as “too much cold.” The truth is the opposite: a frozen coil is a coil starving for heat.
The indoor coil — the evaporator, sitting in the sheet-metal cabinet above your furnace — does its job by absorbing heat from the air blowing across it. When it can't get enough heat, either because not enough warm air is moving across it or because there's not enough refrigerant inside it, the coil's surface drops below 32°. The moisture it normally drains away freezes instead. And then it snowballs: ice insulates the coil, which starves it further, which makes more ice, until the whole thing is a solid block and almost no air comes out of your vents.
One more way this shows up that fools people every summer: water around the base of the furnace in July. The coil sits directly above the furnace, so when that ice melts — overnight, or when the system finally gives up — the water runs down and the call comes in as “my furnace is leaking.” The furnace is fine. The ice was the story.
Here are the six causes, in the order I'd check them on a call.
Restricted airflow
Same villain as a short-cycling furnace, different season. A clogged filter, blocked return vents, or a dirty blower wheel means less warm air crossing the coil — less heat delivered, coil temperature falls, ice forms. This is the first thing to rule out because it's the most common and the cheapest to fix.
Check the filter. If you can't see light through it, that may be your whole problem.
Low refrigerant — which means a leak
Less refrigerant in the coil means lower pressure, and lower pressure means a colder coil — cold enough to freeze the condensate on its surface. Here's the part worth remembering: refrigerant is not gasoline. It doesn't get used up. It circulates in a sealed loop, and the charge your system was born with should be the charge it retires with. If someone “tops off” your system every summer, you're not buying refrigerant — you're buying the same unfixed leak, twice a year, forever. The real repair is finding the leak, fixing it, and setting the charge by the numbers.
Blower problems
If the blower motor is weak, failing, or set to the wrong speed, airflow across the coil drops even with a clean filter. The symptoms overlap with Cause One, but the fix is on the equipment side — motor diagnosis, capacitor, or speed settings.
A dirty coil
Years of running with marginal filters coats the coil's fins in a blanket of dust. That blanket does two things at once: blocks airflow through the fins and insulates the coil surface from the air that does get through. Either one alone can push a coil below freezing. Evaporator coil cleaning is careful work in a tight space — the fins bend if you look at them wrong — and it's a technician's job.
Running the AC on cool nights
Air conditioners are designed around warm air. When outdoor temperatures fall into the low 60s and below, system pressures drop, and the coil can dip below freezing even with everything working correctly. In Omaha this bites during the shoulder seasons — those May and September stretches where it's 85° at 4 PM and 58° at midnight. If the nights are cool, open windows beat a running condenser.
A failing metering device
The metering device — on most modern systems a thermostatic expansion valve, or TXV — controls exactly how much refrigerant feeds into the coil. When it sticks or fails, the coil can be underfed even with a perfect charge, and the freeze pattern looks a lot like a leak. Separating the two takes gauges, temperature clamps, and superheat readings. This one is firmly professional territory.
Why this is worth taking seriously: a coil running frozen doesn't just cost you cooling. Liquid refrigerant that should have evaporated in the coil can flood back to the compressor — the heart of the system and its most expensive component. Compressors don't tolerate liquid, and replacing one is a repair that runs into the thousands. A $20 filter versus that math is the easiest decision in HVAC.

One last thing: ice on the outdoor unit in winter is a completely different animal — that's heat pump territory, with its own defrost logic and its own rules. That one gets its own field note.
