Why is my furnace short-cycling?
Short-cycling is when your furnace fires up, runs for a few minutes — sometimes only seconds — then shuts off, over and over. A healthy furnace on a cold Nebraska day runs in long, steady cycles. One that starts and stops constantly is telling you something is wrong, and it's worth listening: every ignition cycle puts wear on the igniter, the inducer motor, and the heat exchanger, and all that starting and stopping burns gas without actually heating your house evenly.
Here are the six causes I see, roughly in order of how often they turn up.
Restricted airflow
The most common one, and often the cheapest fix in HVAC. When a filter is clogged or too many vents are closed, the furnace can't move enough air across its heat exchanger. Heat builds up inside the cabinet, a safety device called the high-limit switch trips, and the furnace shuts itself down to avoid overheating. It cools off, restarts, overheats again — that's your cycle.
Check your filter first. If you can't see light through it, replace it. And keep supply vents open, even in rooms you don't use — the system was designed to breathe through all of them.
A dirty flame sensor
The flame sensor is a thin metal rod that proves to the control board that the burners actually lit. Over time it builds up a layer of oxidation, and a dirty sensor can't “see” the flame. The telltale pattern: the furnace ignites, runs for five to ten seconds, then the burners drop out. After a few failed attempts, many furnaces lock themselves out entirely.
Cleaning one takes a technician a few minutes with fine abrasive. It's one of the most common no-heat calls every winter.
Blocked intake or exhaust pipes
Most newer furnaces breathe through two PVC pipes that exit the side of your house. In an Omaha winter, those pipes can get blocked by drifted snow, frost buildup, or — in fall — leaves and even nests. When airflow through them is restricted, a pressure switch shuts the furnace down as a safety measure.
This one's worth a walk outside: find the pipes, make sure both are clear, and keep snow shoveled away from them all season.
Thermostat problems
Sometimes the furnace is fine and the brain is the problem. Dying batteries can cause erratic calls for heat. A thermostat mounted near a supply register or in direct sunlight gets fooled into thinking the house is warm and shuts the system down early. And some thermostats have a cycle-rate setting that's simply configured wrong for the equipment.
An oversized furnace
This is the one nobody wants to hear, because there's no part to replace. A furnace that's too big for the house blasts heat, satisfies the thermostat in minutes, and shuts down — long before air has circulated evenly. You get short cycles, temperature swings between rooms, and extra wear, forever.
It happens because equipment gets sized by rule of thumb instead of by an actual load calculation on the home. It's the single biggest reason Vantage sizes every system by the math, not the truck stock.
A failing limit switch or control issue
If a furnace has been overheating for months (see Cause One), the high-limit switch itself can weaken and start tripping early — even after the airflow problem is fixed. Control board faults can cause similar behavior. Diagnosing these means live testing with a meter, and it's firmly professional territory.

One more thing worth knowing: in extreme cold, a properly working furnace will run long cycles — that's normal and efficient. Short bursts every few minutes are not. If you've checked the filter, the vents, and the pipes and it's still cycling, the problem is one a technician needs to see running.
